What is Inflation?
Inflation is the rate at which the general level of prices rises over time, reducing the purchasing power of money. If inflation is 10% this year, something that cost PKR 100 last year now costs PKR 110. Your money buys less of the same goods and services โ this is the "hidden tax" of inflation.
In Pakistan, inflation has averaged 10โ15% per year over the past decade, with spikes to 35%+ in 2023. In India, it averages 5โ7%. In the USA, the Fed targets 2% long-term. Understanding inflation is critical for salary negotiations, investment planning, and retirement planning.

The Devastating Impact of High Inflation
Pakistan's inflation reality: at 12% average inflation, prices double every 6 years. This means:
| Year | PKR 1,00,000 buys goods worth (in today's terms) |
|---|---|
| Today (2025) | PKR 1,00,000 |
| 2031 (6 years) | PKR 50,663 โ lost half its value |
| 2037 (12 years) | PKR 25,668 โ only ยผ of original value |
| 2043 (18 years) | PKR 12,998 โ barely an eighth |
This is why keeping all your savings in a regular savings account (at 7โ10%) while inflation runs at 12โ15% is a losing proposition โ you are getting poorer every year in real terms even as your bank balance grows.
Real Return vs Nominal Return
The Fisher Equation explains the relationship between nominal returns, real returns, and inflation:
- More precisely: Real Return = ((1 + Nominal) / (1 + Inflation)) โ 1
Examples: A National Savings Certificate yielding 17% nominal, with 12% inflation: Real return = (1.17/1.12)โ1 = 4.46% real. Compare: Bank savings account at 10% with 12% inflation: Real return = (1.10/1.12)โ1 = โ1.79% โ you are losing money in real terms! Any investment must beat inflation to preserve your wealth.
Inflation and Salary Negotiations
One of the most practical uses of the inflation calculator is for salary negotiations. If you received a 10% raise this year but inflation was 12%, your real purchasing power decreased by approximately 2%. To maintain your standard of living, you need at minimum an inflation-matching raise. To truly advance financially, you need a raise above inflation.
Example: Your salary was PKR 150,000/month in 2022. Annual inflation was 26% in 2022-23. To maintain equivalent purchasing power in 2023, you needed PKR 189,000. If you only got to PKR 165,000, you effectively took a real pay cut of PKR 24,000/month.
Inflation-Beating Investment Options in Pakistan
- National Savings Schemes (DSC, SSC, Behbood): currently 15โ17% โ barely beating inflation
- Equity mutual funds: historically 15โ25% over long term, beats inflation but volatile
- Real estate: capital appreciation often exceeds inflation in major cities
- Gold: natural inflation hedge, historically maintains real value over decades
- SCRA (Special Convertible Rupee Account): for overseas Pakistanis, USD returns hedge PKR depreciation
- Voluntary Pension Scheme: equity component can beat inflation, with tax benefits
